Most of us can remember an older female relative who could do a craft that was both intricate and beautiful. For us, the crafts that our relatives could do were somewhat of a wonder, but older generations of women were usually expected to be able to be able to knit, sew, and play a musical instrument. As social customs changed, so did the women doing arts and crafts. However, over the last decade women have started to re-enter the world of the crafts that their grandparents would have done.
Some of the most common arts and crafts that are popping up again are knitting and crocheting. There seems to be several reason for the new fond popularity of these hobbies. One, is that fashion trends have shifted towards knit like fabrics and patterns once again. In the winter kitted and crocheted scarfs are very fashionable as are knitted purses. As these items are fairly easy to create once one can sew, women seem to be drawn to these hobbies.
Another reason that these crafts seem to be popular again is that arts and crafts are once again look at as fashionable. Women who can do something creative with their hands are once again looking on favorably. Not only are arts and crafts favorable but our culture now has a way to show arts and crafts in craft fairs, art shows, and other displays which highlights these talents. So where our grandmothers once performed these hobbies out of necessity now these hobbies are something that be done in one’s spare time that brings pleasure to the person doing them.
